Nothing says, “I’m glad you’re here” like greeting a student with: “hey… uh… buddy!”
Is there a difference between knowing a student’s name and recognizing their face? Which one communicates “you’re valued, appreciated, and I’m glad you’re here”?
I’m glad God knows my name…
- “But now thus says the Lord… ‘Fear not, for I have redeemed you; I have called you by name, you are mine.'” (Isaiah 43:1)
- “I am the good shepherd. I know my own and my own know me, just as the Other knows me and I know the Father…” (John 10:14)
- “… The sheep hear his voice, and he calls his own sheep by name and leads them out.” (John 10:3)
If you would, take 60 seconds to watch the video below that encourages us to Know Your Students. Then be challenged to start learning their names. If you know their name, make it a point to learn one thing that’s going on in their lives.
Remember, students are okay with you saying, “remind me again what your name is.” It shows them you care enough to even ask.
Students are more observant than we give them credit for… They know when we don’t know them, but they also know when we are really trying to learn their name. Then they rejoice with us when we finally remember their name.
